Between Flood and Drought – Original Artwork

Between Flood & Drought explores the extremes of the Australian landscape through earthy colour, botanical forms and expressive marks. Created as the hero work of the collection, this original artwork reflects the powerful contrast between too much water and not enough.

The dripping lines running through the background suggest the movement of rain and floodwater. They bring a sense of energy and unpredictability to the surface, almost as though the landscape is being reshaped by water before our eyes. In contrast, the deep palette of ochre, rust, brown and dusty cream draws from the colours of dry earth and sun scorched Country.

Botanical forms sit within this tension, bringing life and softness to an otherwise earthy and confronting landscape. Their presence speaks to the resilience of Australian flora and the remarkable ability of the natural environment to endure periods of both flooding and drought. The flowers are not delicate in a fragile sense. They represent persistence, survival and renewal.

There is a strong sense of duality throughout the work. Flood can transform the landscape with overwhelming force, while drought can gradually strip it back, leaving behind dry earth, faded vegetation and a sense of scarcity. Yet both are part of the natural cycles that shape the Australian environment.

The colour palette was deliberately restrained and grounded in the Australian landscape. Warm browns, burnt terracotta and muted neutrals create a feeling of dry earth, while the lighter marks and flowing drips introduce the presence of water. Together, these elements create a visual conversation between abundance and absence, movement and endurance.

As the central work in the collection, Between Flood & Drought brings these opposing experiences together in a single piece. This artwork is ultimately about resilience and the ever changing relationship between water, land and life.

It is a reflection on the extremes that define so much of the Australian landscape, while also acknowledging what happens in between. After the flood comes retreat. After drought comes rain. The landscape shifts, responds and begins again.

Between Flood & Drought is an expressive contemporary Australian artwork for collectors drawn to earthy palettes, botanical forms and work that carries a deeper connection to the Australian environment.
