After the Rain – Original Artwork

Creating Australian botanical artworks have been a way for me to explore the character of the Australian landscape, and After the Rain reflects the moment when the land begins to respond to water again.

Set against a warm earthy palette of terracotta, clay, dusty pink and deep brown, the work features expressive native botanical forms reaching upwards across the surface. The flowers have been painted with loose, gestural marks, allowing the layers beneath them to remain visible. Dripping lines run down through the background, creating a strong sense of rain moving across the landscape.

There is something hopeful about the feeling of this piece. The landscape feels dry and weathered, but the flowers are full of movement and life. The contrast between the parched earth tones and the flowing marks of water speaks to the unpredictable cycles of the Australian environment, where periods of drought can eventually give way to rain and new growth.

The botanical forms are deliberately striking and expressive rather than strictly representational. Their elongated petals and layered shapes create movement throughout the composition, while the repeated forms suggest a landscape filled with native flowering plants. White and cream highlights bring the flowers forward from the earthy background, creating depth and adding a softness to the otherwise strong palette.

After the Rain forms part of the Between Flood & Drought collection, which explores the extremes of water and the way they shape the Australian landscape. Where flood is represented through the presence and movement of water, this work focuses more closely on what happens when the rain has passed and the land begins to respond.

The painting carries a sense of bold renewal rather than feeling overly delicate. There is strength in the botanical forms and in the landscape they represent. The marks are imperfect, layered and energetic, reflecting the natural irregularity of Country and the resilience of Australian flora.

This Australian botanical artwork is an earthy and contemporary interpretation of native Australian flowers, created for collectors who are drawn to expressive botanical art, natural colour palettes and artworks with a strong connection to the Australian landscape.

After the Rain celebrates that shift in the environment when water returns to the land and life begins to emerge again. It is a reminder that even after the harshest conditions, the landscape has its own ability to respond, regenerate and begin again.
