The Matriarch (Two)
This artwork symbolises women and the strength we have individually and collectively. It was created to represent womanhood and all that we are. My time as a mother is reflected in this piece also, sharing symbolism of single motherhood, independence and unwavering strength and grace. There is a single figure in the middle of the artwork. She stands with her womb and breasts exposed- her ability to give and nurture life. Adorning her head is a large crown, woven with emu feathers. She stands over the Marrambidya Bila (Murrumbigee River) and the dry lands of my Country. Three significant hills surround her- places of ceremony in which tradition and lore is passed down. The meeting places either side of her represent the people around her that support, love and guide her, and help raise her up. There is rain and watering holes within the artwork also- these symbols were included to share the struggles and triumphs of womanhood and the idea of giving yourself what you need in order to thrive. Lastly, she shares a tattoo under her breast- the same tattoo that adorns my body. It reads in full, ‘To be loved is to be known’, and is a reminder to always love yourself, know your worth and remain true to your beliefs.
